Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is a tiny little shop in the heart of Chinatown that has been around for over 30 years. It’s usually packed but we came here on a random weeknight after dinner and it was completely empty which was a nice surprise.
They have an extensive selection of flavors, usually 30+ at any given time, most of which are very unique and unsurprisingly Asian-inspired.
They also let you try as many flavors as you like before deciding, which can make things a little chaotic when it’s crowded.
We split two scoops in a cone and decided to go with two of their more popular flavors, after reading through a ton of Yelp reviews. We chose the Green Tea Oreo, which has a green tea base with chunks of Oreo throughout, and the Zen Butter, which is a peanut butter/sesame flavor. We also sampled the Almond Cookie flavor which tastes exactly like its namesake. They put a Green Tea Pocky in the cone which made for a nice presentation.
These were very large scoops and this cone should have cost us $6.95 but we got undercharged at $4.50. We gave her a chance to charge us the full rate by confirming the price but I guess it was just our lucky day! Maybe we got a discount for having a cute baby?
The Zen Butter had very subtle peanut butter/sesame notes to it but didn’t taste very strong. It was still enjoyable despite not being super flavorful. The Green Tea Oreo could have used some more Oreo chunks in it, but we still liked the mix of Eastern & Western flavors. Both of our scoops had a great softish texture that pulled really nicely, and both flavors were quite creamy.
Overall we are big fans of Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. This wasn’t our first visit and it certainly won’t be our last! If you’re in Chinatown this should be your go-to for dessert!
