MacBar is a dedicated to one thing, mac & cheese, and they have an entire menu of different varieties. They also have a bright yellow restaurant and basically bright yellow everything. Even the C in their name is replaced with an elbow pasta. It’s a very small spot in Nolita with just 3 little tables and a few cushioned stools for seating. There was barely room for Ryan’s stroller inside, and it was pretty busy for our whole visit.
All of their Macs take 15 minutes to bake, so we had time to wait for a table to open up. 15 minutes sounds long but it’s a reasonable time to wait and it means that each one is freshly made to order which is nice. They had a lot of choices on their menu including a Lobster Mac and one with Duck Confit. Each one has 3 sizing options (S/M/L) and the 2 larger sizes come with very cute yellow plastic containers shaped like a piece of macaroni.
Rob got the Cheeseburger Mac…and he probably would have ordered a Small if not for the cute container (since we had just eaten tacos at Barrio Chino). It was reasonably sized for the price. The meat pieces were small but plentiful. Overall it was very cheesy, and had almost too much cheese for the portion of pasta.
The top layer of cheese had a nice burn to it. Melissa didn’t order anything, as she’s not a fan of mac & cheese, but sampled a couple of bites and thought it was fine for what it was.
Overall this is definitely a fun place to go if you’re a Mac & Cheese lover and want to try a fun and unique take on the dish.
